Koko the gorilla adopts 2 kittens after being unable to have children of his own

Koko the gorilla received a special gift for her 44th birthday. The gorilla, famous for his knowledge of American Sign Language, was given a box of kittens and was able to choose two of them as pets, while the others were adopted into large homes. Koko received her first cat “All Ball” after signing that she wanted a cat and wasn’t satisfied with a toy, in 1984.


Koko lives at the Gorilla Foundation in Redwood City, California with her trainer Francine Patterson. According to Patterson, Koko is able to recognize 2,000 English words and communicate with her handlers using over 1,000 gorilla sign language cues. When Koko learned that All Ball was actually dead, he cried and signed “Sleeping Cat”.
