A billionaire couple donates 1 million euros a week to charity for an entire year

There are few people in the world who are lucky enough to have it all: fame, success, money. One of these is Rob Hale who, after years of sacrifices, has become one of the richest men on the planet. Rob and his wife Karen, however, are aware of the enormous wealth they possess and as a result have never had a problem giving some of their money away to the less fortunate. Boston’s US billionaires have always donated millions to charity, but they decided to take it a step further.

Rob and Karen have chosen to donate exactly €52 million to at least 52 non-profit organizations in one year. To achieve this, they will donate 1 million euros a week. Rob Hale is the chairman of giant Granite Telecommunications, a €1.5 billion company that provides communications services to more than two-thirds of the top 100 US companies. Furthermore, he is the owner of the Boston Celtics: his assets are close to 5 billion euros. The couple has previously donated to high-profile organizations like Boston Children’s Hospital and Rob’s alma mater, Connecticut College, but this time, they’ve chosen to support smaller charities. Most of the donations will be used to build funds for various non-profit organizations.

“We think all of these organizations are very interesting and have an impact on the community, but sadly they are quite small,” Hale said. In most cases, they don’t have a cash reserve, so this is our attempt to create a foundation for long-term success,” she added. The Hales deposited their first check at the New England Wildlife Center. In six months, the couple donated 28.5 million euros to 29 organizations dealing with environmental issues or health research. Hale explained that organizations should be able to invest the million euros and make at least five percent (€50,000) of it annually. “This donation can give organizations a more stable future and a chance to say, ‘Okay, we know where the money is coming from and we can focus on doing a great job,’” commented Rob.
